Rowland finally gets shot at pro soccer

Staff Report

Thanks to Real Salt Lake, Jeff Rowland has a little more soccer to look forward to.

After not getting picked in the four rounds of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft on Jan. 20, Rowland was taken by Real Salt Lake as the second pick in the four-round supplemental draft Thursday.

Three Lobos were taken in the SuperDraft, but Rowland had to wait another week to find out his fate. Lance Watson was the highest picked Lobo ever, going 16th to the Kansas City Wizards. Brandon Moss followed him at 27th to the Columbus Crew and Josh Brown was the last Lobo taken in the SuperDraft at 45th to the Colorado Rapids.

Rowland scored three goals in the NCAA Tournament and finished runner-up for the Hermann Trophy, given to college soccer's top player.

He was also UNM's leading scorer this year with 16 goals and four assists.

Rowland reports to training camp the first week of February and will have to make the team before he signs a contract at the end of March.

Rowland could not be reached for comment Sunday.
