Letter: Bush the Crusader needs to be checked, balanced

Editor,

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' testimony this morning made one thing perfectly clear: President Bush believes that he need not gain permission from the federal judiciary or Legislature before labeling anyone in the world a target of his so-called War on Terrorism.

He has said publicly why this is so, and it has little to do with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act or Congress's 2001 "Resolution for the Use of Force."

When once asked whether he sought his father's advice before deciding to invade Iraq, President Bush famously replied that, as president, he answered to "a higher father."

That remark - and Bush's evident disdain for the Constitution and the rule of law - makes it clear he believes he enjoys what amounts to the divine right of kings.

Congress and the judiciary must re-establish constitutional checks and balances before Bush the Crusader plunges the nation and the world into a geopolitical conflagration from which none of us will emerge intact.
