Editor,
In response to the comments by David Alvarado in the letter in Friday's Daily Lobo, "Focusing on race reveals the beginning of racism," most people only focus on those issues that they perceive as directly impacting their lives.
Racism, sexism, classism and all other power-related differences impact all of us in this society. One only needs to read the boundless reports of research to find evidence of this. Yet, it is often easier for us to historicize such issues and thus dismiss them as the ranting of "those" people.
As a white man living in a society that favors me, I could easily say all these issues were resolved years ago, so why can't we just all get along? Until we realize that, as a society, our issues are shared ones on which we must all focus, we won't progress toward a healthy society.
My suggestion: Read the literature before you start dismissing issues.
