UNM beats Toads on the road

Staff Report

Starting off 1-for-23 from the field isn't a recipe for success.

The Texas Christian University Horned Frogs learned that lesson Saturday in a 53-42 loss to the UNM men's basketball team.

The win gives the Lobos their second road victory of the year. They are now 15-9 overall and 6-5 in the Mountain West Conference, while TCU dropped to 5-19 and 1-9.

Lobo senior Mark Walters scored 19 points on the Horned Frogs, including 14 in the second half. He also scored 10 of UNM's final 14 points.

The Horned Frogs ended the game 13-of-62 for 21 percent from the field. It was the lowest percentage by a Lobo opponent since UNM held Howard Payne to a 6-of-40 performance for 15 percent in a 102-32 victory at Johnson Gym on Dec. 23, 1964.

TCU's previous low in field goal percentage was 27 percent in a 90-41 loss to the University of Texas in 1978 before its 21 percent showing against the Lobos.

David Chiotti chipped in seven points and 10 rebounds to help UNM snag its third win in a row.

Judson Stubbs had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Horned Frogs. TCU has lost five straight games and 11 of its last 12.
