2 golfers named to All-MWC team

The UNM women's golf team had two players named to the All-Mountain West Conference team Saturday at the MWC Championships.

The Lobos finished second overall at the conference tournament, behind strong play from freshmen golfers Mikaela Backstedt and Py Bengtsson. Backstedt finished runner up at the MWC Championships. University of Nevada-Las Vegas freshman Da Sol Chung defeated Backstedt in a playoff. Bengtsson finished third overall and both UNM freshmen were named all-conference in their first season.

UNLV also took the team title, winning with a combined score of 895. UNM finished with a team score of 900 while Brigham Young University finished third overall with a score of 907.

Backstedt held a two-shot lead at one point, but fell to second after shooting a 5-over 77. For her performance, Backstedt was named co-Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year along with Chung.

As a team, UNM got within two shots of UNLV, but was never able to take the lead. UNM freshman Morgan Grantham tied for 14th place at 230. Sophomore Alexandra Phelps tied for 17th at 231 while sophomore Giselle Claux tied for 23rd at 236.

The Lobos find out where they will travel for the NCAA Regional Tournament on May 1.
