Baseball team loses fifth-straight game

The UNM baseball team is on a five-game losing streak after falling 8-2 to No. 5 Oregon State on Sunday in Corvallis, Ore.

The losing streak is the Lobos' longest of the season and drops their overall record to 27-18.

Oregon State's Daniel Turpen was awarded the victory after pitching 6 1/3 innings and giving up seven hits, two runs and striking out two. Lobo senior Jesse Perez suffered his first loss of the season, giving up 11 hits and eight runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Beavers took a 3-0 lead against the Lobos in the second inning, which started with Oregon State's Bill Rowe hitting a double. Oregon State scored a run in the fifth inning and added four more runs in the sixth.

Ryan Barba recorded one of the two Lobo RBIs when he singled to left in the third inning. Ian Hollick scored the other UNM run in the seventh after hitting a double to reach base. Zach Arnett hit a two-out single to send Hollick home.

The Lobos start a three-game series against Mountain West Conference foe Brigham Young University on Thursday. UNM has won seven straight MWC games.
