Letter: Vehicles' emissions more harmful than cigarettes

Editor,

I found Kristen Woodruff's anti-smoking argument in the June 1-7 issue of the Daily Lobo to be very eloquent and prudent.

However, I'm far more concerned about other sources of environmental pollution.

Firsthand smoke from a few dozen smokers is infinitesimal in comparison to the large amounts of smoke expelled from large vehicles such as city buses, semi-trucks and large dump trucks.

When driving near these vehicles, I've often seen enormous clouds of black smoke billowing into the atmosphere as they accelerate from a red light. This dangerous carbon monoxide eventually dissolves into the air we breathe.

All this smoke may be the primary cause of asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and other serious pulmonary diseases.

The EPA should immediately halt the manufacture and use of these vehicles. They need to order the installation of catalytic converters or other devices to reduce their notorious environmental impact.

So, if Woodruff is as concerned about the environment as I am, then perhaps she should shift her focus toward these sources of pollution.
