Letter: Bush's veto on stem cells not morally responsible

Editor,

Does it make sense from any standpoint to destroy embryonic stem cells instead of using them for the potential benefit of us all?

I admit that I am a fallible human being, but I am willing to learn. Will somebody inform me of President Bush's justification for his policy against stem cell research? It is my understanding that the bill President Bush vetoed Wednesday only authorizes the use of those embryonic stem cells which are destined to be destroyed. If this is true, I want someone to explain to me why it is morally responsible to allow the destruction of those embryonic stem cells - which ensures that their destruction will benefit no one - and why it is morally irresponsible to allow those same embryonic stem cells to be used for research that has the potential to benefit many people in the future.
