Editor,
I thought that Matthew Chavez's column in the July 20-26 Daily Lobo, "Middle East conflict distorted by U.S.," was perfect.
I think that it is brave for anyone to openly criticize Israel, because there is so much sensitivity around the issues of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. If people allow this to stop them from criticizing the war crimes and atrocities that Israel commits, then we are censoring ourselves and tacitly condoning their immoral actions.
I am Jewish and was brought up to believe that any criticism of the state of Israel was anti-Semitic. Now I want to say that this is wrong. I do not support the state of Israel, because I do not support any form of imperialism, especially when it includes willful violence against civilians.
I want people to know that many Jews think the same way that I do, but you wouldn't know it based on what you hear in the news. I think that all Jews should be brave and really examine their beliefs. A college campus should be the perfect place for reexamining your upbringing and coming to your own conclusions without being afraid to stand up for them.
