After reading Damian Erasmus's letter to the Daily Lobo on Friday, I was very upset to see that this article came from a UNM alumnus. He should know better.
The U.S. is a multicultural country, and the people of the U.S. are proud of who they are and where they come from. Many people came to the U.S. for the freedom of keeping their culture while fighting for a better job and a safer way of living, while some people are indigenous to America and fight every day to keep their land and their culture.
The U.S. is not thought to be inferior because of a Christian presence. It is thought of as inferior for its lack of keeping its nose out of other nations' business. Anyone who believes that multiculturalism is a "grave threat" to America should learn to deal with the fact that America is multicultural and get out if that's too hard.
The last time the U.S. taught Western culture in its own lands was when it kidnapped American Indian children and forced them into boarding schools. We don't come to school to learn about Western values. We come here to become more educated to get better jobs. Western values can take a walk. We all follow our own values.
Textbooks are biased toward Western culture as it is. Any text written from a certain country is going to be biased. The U.S. should realize the fact that everyone here is not Western-minded, and textbooks should include all the details of the world's history and not just the American government's biased view.

No culture is better or worse than any other. They are all equal, and they all have their own forms of technology. We should all be proud of being multicultural - I know I am.
