Letter: Violating international law would hurt U.S.'s image

Editor,

As a veteran, I'm extremely troubled by recent efforts exerted by our nation's president. After the Supreme Court declared that his established court system to process terror suspects was in violation of the Geneva Conventions, Bush is pushing for greater executive power to ensure that the CIA and the military can continue to use questionable interrogation tactics, among other things.

With the morality of our nation's foreign policy already in question, I am thankful that Republicans and Democrats alike have put their respective feet down to stop this from being passed. Unilateral actions that sidestep the United Nations don't help our nation's image in the eyes of our people or other sovereign states.

Manipulating the Geneva Conventions would be devastating on an entirely new level. The international law provided by the Geneva Conventions is a safeguard against things most heinous to nature. I would be ashamed if my country had any part in violating or manipulating those laws.

While I am not a religious person, I would say a prayer for all those serving this country and any other country.
