Lobos move up in conference

Even if it was a letdown game, the Lobos still got the result they wanted.

The UNM women's basketball team struggled early but earned a 57-47 win at Air Force on Saturday.

The Lobos extended their winning streak to seven games and improved to 19-7 overall and 9-4 in the Mountain West Conference.

The Falcons dropped to 5-19 overall and 1-12 in conference.

UNM struggled offensively but was bailed out by forward Dionne Marsh. The junior scored a game-high 24 points and was the only Lobo to score in double figures.

Marsh took just 12 field-goal attempts and added 10 free throws. She also finished with two blocks.

Lobo guards Julie Briody and Brandi Kimble each finished with eight points and eight rebounds.

Pamela Findlay led the Falcons with 14 points. Letricia Castillo

added 10.

UNM shot just 30 percent from the field in the first half - including 1-of-8 from 3-point range - but managed to lead 21-20 at halftime.

The Lobos outrebounded Air Force 42-31 and limited the Falcons to 33 percent shooting in the second half. Both teams turned the ball over 17 times in the game.

With three games remaining, UNM trails Brigham Young and Texas Christian in the MWC. BYU is 10-2 in conference, followed by TCU at 9-3.

The Lobos are tied with Utah at 8-4. But at 19-17 overall, UNM holds the tiebreaker over Utah, which is 16-10 overall.
