ASUNM senators choose Greeks over student body

Editor,

I've read various stories in the Daily Lobo with both positive and negative reactions from peers and myself. However, I've never felt so strongly about a story until I read about the bill for a polling station in Mesa Vista Hall. It's not the bill's failure that angered me, but rather the cavalier attitude that some of the ASUNM senators had about shooting it down - in particular, the words of Sen. Matt Beck, when he suggested that a polling station be placed on Sigma Chi Road rather than in Mesa Vista Hall. This only shows that ASUNM isn't interested in the general student body, but rather the minority of students in the Greek system.

ASUNM Sen. Ashley Fate suggested there was a "bias" for the ethnic centers, which represent Latino, African-American and American-Indian groups. These are groups that are underrepresented by ASUNM and other organizations on campus, but Fate is dismissive of a polling station in the area because she sees "favoritism" from the ASUNM senators who do see the need for a polling station there.

I find this situation very disconcerting, and if this were a real government group, I'd accuse it of abuse of power. What we're seeing here are a few senators who wish to keep their place in ASUNM instead of properly representing the student body. Clearly, these students are on the road to being corrupt politicians when they graduate from UNM, interested not in representing the people who elect them, but rather keeping their elected positions above all else.
