After qualifying two athletes for regionals in their opening meet, the Lobos will try to improve on that success this weekend.

The UNM track and field outdoor season continues today in Los Angeles at USC's Trojan Invitational.

UNM is coming off a solid opening meet at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational last week.

Jarrin Solomon, the leader of the Lobos' 4x400-meter relay team, who also competes in the 200 and 400, is looking to punch his ticket to the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday.

"I should qualify for regionals, and I want to compete for the top five," he said. "There are some good guys competing - a few All-Americans."

Josh Cosio, the lone high jumper for the Lobos and a regional qualifier last year, said he has high expectations for himself this weekend.

"I'm looking to jump about 6-10 and qualify for the Midwest Regional," he said.

Lobo javelin thrower Anthony Fairbanks was named Mountain West Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for finishing second and qualifying for the Midwest Regional. He had a career-best throw of 217-10, which gave him the fifth-best mark in the nation so far this season.

Fifth-year senior Timmie Murphy won the women's 3000-meter run, while Sheyenne Lewis finished in third place last weekend.

In the field events, Alesha

Walker won the long jump with a leap of 19-4 3/4.

With Matt and Mark Henry retiring at the end of the season, the Lobos are looking to get into midseason form so they can finish strong.

Mark Henry said UNM should show some improvements at the Trojan Invitational.

"I expect us to get a little better this week," he said. "Spring break is usually a pretty light time, but we've been working real hard since. I think the whole group will be more trained and better off since the last meet."
