U.S. attorney firings point to White House deception

Editor,

It has been reported that former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias was not put on the White House's firing list until after receiving phone calls from Sen. Pete Domenici and Rep. Heather Wilson. The U.S. attorney in California, Carol Lam, was fired one day before executing a search warrant on former CIA official Dusty Foggo in the investigation of Wilson's good friend, former Rep. Duke Cunningham, a California Republican. Five years ago, President Bush obstructed justice in an investigation of his good friend Jack Abramoff by firing the U.S. attorney for Guam, Frederick Black.

I'm not so concerned about the U.S. attorneys who were fired by the White House for not being loyal to Bush. I am more concerned about the U.S. attorneys who were not fired. I'm sure they are all doing a heck of a job.

It is impossible to keep up with the scandals dripping out of the White House - from being the first appointed president in history, to ignoring terrorist attack warnings while on a month-long vacation, to allowing the worst attack on U.S. soil in history, to borrowing more money from foreign creditors than all other presidents combined.

Scandals have come from Katrina to Iraq, Halliburton to Enron, and from Lewis "Scooter" Libby going straight to jail; from saying that the U.S. Constitution is just a piece of paper, to the FBI's abuse of the Patriot Act, legalizing torture, secret police and secret prisons; from lying to start a war in Iraq, to losing a war; from not sending enough troops, to "mission accomplished," "bring 'em on," "stay the course" and the "troop surge;" from the scandals at Army and veterans' hospitals, to breaking the Army and sending it into a death spiral, and not supporting the troops with the proper equipment and armor; from defending the Shiite Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution of Iraq, to not defending the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. Bill of Rights and habeas corpus.

Thomas Jefferson said habeas corpus is part of "the creed of our political faith," and "should we wander from it in moments of error or alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and to regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty and safety."

Appeasers of Bush's tyranny are suffering terribly from cognitive dissonance. The critics of Bush's dictatorship also seem to be suffering from apathy and lack of resolve. Don't go to class or work today. Walk out and make your voices heard.
