Former UNM player goes pro

Staff Report

Quincy Black is taking his football career to the next level.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Black, a former UNM linebacker, as the fourth pick in the third round of the NFL Draft on Saturday. Black was the 68th pick overall.

Black could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Black graduated from UNM in December 2006 with a degree in university studies. As a Lobo last season, Black recorded a team-high 114 tackles and earned first team All-Mountain West Conference honors.

Black is the 62nd UNM player to be selected in the NFL Draft and the ninth under 10th-year head coach Rocky Long. Black is also the earliest selection for a UNM defensive player since Brian Urlacher in 2000.

"He's a great kid," Tampa Bay Head Coach John Gruden told GoLobos.com. "He wants to be here, and he wants to be a football player. With his traits and his overall athletic ability, we're going to be hard-pressed not to put him on a field."
