Editor,
I agree with Director of Residence Life Randy Boeglin that living on campus is an experience you will never forget. Residing on campus is beneficial to one's academics and social life. While the dorms do offer great amenities, there are other options for living on campus.
Greek Life at UNM provides many opportunities for its chapter members to reside on campus. Four nationally recognized sororities house more than 150 undergraduate women in their chapter facilities. Being an active collegiate member of a sorority not only provides you with housing, but also with lifelong friendships, networking and the opportunity to become actively involved on campus. Each sorority employs a personal chef, house mother and housekeeper to ensure the chapter facility is kept orderly and in excellent condition.
The average price to live in a sorority is very comparable to living in the dorms and, in some cases, less expensive. The average cost for one academic year in a double occupancy room with about 17 to 19 meals a week within a sorority house is $5,495. Each chapter facility has large rooms, adequate closet space, large dining areas, formal living rooms, TV lounges and sufficient bathroom space.
Living within a sorority facility on UNM's campus allows each chapter member to become actively involved on campus. Every sorority member is also a participating member of at least one other student organization, if not more. Many student leaders and executive officers of student organizations have gained campus experience from living in sorority facilities.
Greek facility housing is a fun atmosphere that helps build leadership skills and community experience and helps chapter members strive for academic excellence.
