Humanity needs to learn consequences of actions

Editor,

The growth of the human population has had a large effect on the environment and its health. As pointed out by Phil Carter's letter in Wednesday's Daily Lobo, we are facing a biological crisis that threatens not only our beloved wolves but all those in the ecosystem, including humans, flora, fauna, animals and everything else that adds beauty to our world. Even if humans address the looming crisis by vastly improving their awareness of the consequences of their practices, exponential population growth would make all improvements null. This is why there needs to be focus on how population growth not only limits the resources available but increases the tension placed upon the ecosystem.

With comprehensive sexual education emphasized along with healthy environmental practices, we could assure a sustainable future. Albuquerque Public Schools has already recognized the importance of comprehensive sexual

education, but Rep. Heather Wilson refuses to represent the voice of those who elected her. I was recently in Washington, D.C., to advocate for this issue, but I was informed by a member of her staff from Indiana that the voices of her constituents were not reason enough to even look into this issue.

A plausible solution is being presented by the voices of the community, but elected representatives are stigmatized by puritanical abstinence-until-marriage programs, which have been proven to be ineffective and a waste of money, time and time again.

Please join Population Connection to help stress the importance of this issue. Contact Wilson's office at 346-6781, or contact her staff member Joe Moser at 202-225-6316. Let them know that a change is needed as soon as possible by supporting the REAL Act. For some more information on how to get involved locally, e-mail Albuquerque@popconnect.org or call 480-6660.
