Prima donna's griping warranted late pick in draft

by Steven Fernandez

I can't decide what was the most absurd occurrence from the NFL Draft weekend - Brady Quinn plummeting to No. 22, the Patriots acquiring Randy Moss or the Philadelphia Eagles drafting Kevin Kolb out of Kazakhstan with their first pick.

Perhaps it was the fact that Pacman Jones didn't get arrested over the two days. Well, at least as far as we know.

Obviously, one of the most painful moments - or hilarious, depending on your perspective - was the free fall of Quinn, who spent more time in the offseason running his mouth about

deserving to be drafted No. 1 than actually performing in workouts.

I'm well-aware of all the positive things Quinn did in his career at Notre Dame, in addition to his ability to bench-press more with his left pinky than I ever will with both arms.

However, his record against ranked opponents in the last two seasons was 0-5, including a 41-14 stomping at the hands of LSU and eventual No. 1 pick JaMarcus Russell. If that's not enough of a red flag, his response to that criticism may have also played a part in his fall from projected top-10 pick to No. 22.

I grew sick of hearing Quinn make excuses and hand out blame for those losses. He told reporters they couldn't take the LSU ripping seriously because Russell didn't have to play against the same defense that Quinn did. While that may be true, I don't think too many NFL executives like hearing Quinn throw his defense under the bus as a reason for his struggles in big games.

So when Quinn had to watch team after team pass on him Saturday while trying to hide his disgust, it didn't bother me that much. And if he thought LSU's defense was tough, what's he going to say after facing the likes of Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu twice a year in his division?

Another shocker this weekend was the Patriots trading for Moss. After acquiring Donte' Stallworth and Adalius Thomas this offseason, I already thought the Patriots were the favorites for next year's Super Bowl. Now they add a player who has 101 career touchdowns and ran about a 3.5 in the 40 in his prime. And if Moss acts up, cutting him won't be painful considering all the Patriots gave up was a fourth-rounder.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Eagles' offseason has looked almost the opposite of the Patriots. They let go of Stallworth as well as former Pro Bowlers Jeff Garcia and Michael Lewis.

Then, on Saturday, the Eagles trade their first-round pick to division rival Dallas, which drafts talented defensive prospect Anthony Spencer. To top that off, Philadelphia used its first pick to draft Kolb from Houston, who wasn't ranked high enough to justify an early second-round pick - especially because the Eagles have a five-time Pro Bowl starter in Donovan McNabb, who is only 30 years old.

In fact, Philadelphia's draft was such a train wreck, I wouldn't be surprised to find out Pacman broke into Andy Reid's office and made our picks for us.

The sad thing is, even Jones may not have made decisions that ridiculous on his own.
