Editor,
Caleb Fort's article in Thursday's Daily Lobo about our student affiliate, Spiritual Youth for Reproductive Justice, and their work to assist low-income students with the cost of contraception is a little bit unclear. The article states that the discounted Ortho Tri-Cyclen costs $15 a month and the generic replacement costs $24.50. Because of the Deficit Reduction Act, the Student Health Center is no longer able to get Ortho Tri-Cyclen at the discounted price and must now pay the full price. The Student Health Center has switched to generic contraceptives in order to save money for students, because the generic price is less than the full, name-brand price.
The Contraceptive Assistance Program will give priority to low-income students who are not insured. Other students will be assisted as funds become available. To find out more or make a donation, please go to Nmrcrc.org. We are looking forward to working with the Student Health Center as it continues to provide excellent care for UNM students.
