From sweet to savory, cafe's fare pleases palettes

by Shandea Williams

Daily Lobo

My brunch cravings were getting annoying until I found this fine desert eatery.

I went to the Slate Street CafÇ during its Saturday brunch. Breakfast was served from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., and lunch was available anytime after 11 a.m. I hadn't been awake for long, so I decided to go the breakfast route.

I ordered something sweet and something salty. First, I had the frittata, which was an oven-baked omelet with smoked salmon, boursin cream cheese, capers and green onions ($8.50). The salty salmon and capers combined with the savory cream cheese gave the omelet that melt-in-your-mouth sensation I was yearning for.

After that, I decided to go with the banana-stuffed brioche French toast ($7.50). Now, I'm sure you've all had French toast, but unless it is stuffed with something (like bananas), your French toast dreams have not yet been fulfilled. This was heavenly, to say the least. It was covered in fresh fruit and served with maple syrup.

Slate Street CafÇ offers an appetizer of fried olives stuffed with roasted garlic and boursin cream cheese ($7.50); this is the perfect starter to any meal. If you are in an appetizer mood, the bruschetta - with your choice of toppings - is sure to please everyone in your party ($9).

Be wary of Slate Street CafÇ if you're a vegetarian. It has meat-free salads and breakfast items, but most of the lunch and dinner entrees are made for carnivores.

I was happy to learn that many of the restaurant's items are all-natural, organic and free of hormones. I am sure this accounts to some degree for how tasty the menu items were.

It has extensive lunch and dinner menus that I was too full to even consider. It also has a wine loft that is open Wednesday through Saturday. I suggest stopping by for a wine tasting. The next one is July 26, from 5 until 7 p.m. ($15).

And even if you're just looking for a saccharine snack, Slate Street CafÇ has a gourmet cupcake menu that will satisfy your deepest sugary cravings.

With its funky decor and delicious food, Slate Street CafÇ is a perfect place to enjoy a solitary cup of coffee or a quality dining experience with the entire family.
