Editor,
Both Brandon Curtis and Austin Duus have misrepresented Richard Berthold's research record in their letters published in the Daily Lobo on Friday and Thursday, respectively. Berthold has published work in peer-reviewed journals since 1978, most notably the article Fourth Century Rhodes, which was published in the respected journal Historia Volume 29 (1980).
Berthold also published a series of reviews for The American Historical Review during the 1980s and 1990s, demonstrating a keen awareness of current scholarship in his field and making a significant contribution to the research profile of UNM's history department.
Additionally, Curtis and Duus failed to record perhaps Berthold's greatest contribution to scholarship - his 1984 book Rhodes in the Hellenistic Age. This book was well received by the scholarly community and remains one of the principle works on the subject more than 20 years after its
publication.
Their debate about UNM's admissions standards and educational priorities notwithstanding, Curtis and Duus should do their research more carefully before dragging an academic's research record into their argument.
