Men's soccer

The UNM men's soccer team was not selected to host an NCAA Tournament game and will travel to play UCLA in the first round Saturday.

UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein said his team is prepared for the matchup against the Bruins.

"It's a good one," he said. "That's a team that everyone dreams about playing for or against as a kid. We're excited."

The Lobos earned an NCAA Tournament bid by winning the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship on the last day of the season. UNM finished in a 0-0 draw with second-place Denver to end the season at 12-4-2 overall and 7-1-2 in conference play.

Meanwhile, UCLA was 8-8-3 overall and 4-4-2 in the Pac-10 Conference.

The Bruins are 8-1 in nine previous meetings with the Lobos, including a 2-0 shutout last year.

The NCAA appearance is the fourth straight for UNM and sixth out of the last seven years.

The Lobos have a 7-4-2 record in NCAA Tournament play.

Men's basketball

The UNM men's basketball team can start the season 6-0 for the first time in almost 10 years when it takes on Hawaii today at The Pit.

UNM is perfect so far under first-year head coach Steve Alford and will play its fifth game in 10 days.

The last time the Lobos started 6-0 was during the 1998-99 season under Dave Bliss.

Hawaii has started this year at 1-2, with losses against San Diego and Illinois and a win over

Alcorn State.

UNM and Hawaii have a history dating back to 1965. The Lobos have an all-time series advantage of 38-17 overall and 20-2 in contests at The Pit.

Women's basketball

The UNM women's basketball team will attempt to rebound from its first loss of the season by hosting the Holiday Inn and Suites Express Midtown Tournament this weekend at The Pit.

The Lobos take on Nicholls State in the first round of the four-team tournament at 8 p.m. on Friday.

UNM comes into the matchup 3-1 on the season after losing a 52-44 heartbreaker to No. 12 California. Meanwhile, the Lady Colonels are 1-1 in 2007.

The Lobos last met Nicholls State in November of 2000. UNM won 83-41.
