UNM to play Nevada in New Mexico Bowl

Staff Report

For the second straight year, the UNM football team will go to the New Mexico Bowl.

The Lobos will take on Western Athletic Conference opponent

Nevada on Dec. 22 at University Stadium.

There was speculation that the Lobos would be left out of a bowl game this season, even after they went 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the Mountain West Conference.

There was doubt because five MWC teams were bowl-eligible this season, with only four bowl obligations allotted to the conference.

MWC Champion BYU finished the season 10-2 overall and 8-0 in conference play and was awarded a trip the Las Vegas Bowl to take on UCLA. Second-place Air Force will take on California in the Armed Forces Bowl after going 9-3 overall and 6-2 in the MWC.

Utah will play Navy in the Poinsettia Bowl. The Utes tied with UNM at 8-4, 5-3.

TCU will take on Houston in the Texas Bowl. TCU finished 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the conference.

Last season, UNM lost in the first New Mexico Bowl, falling 20-12 to San Jose State. The last time the Lobos won a bowl game was in 1961 when they defeated Western Michigan in the Aviation Bowl.
