Overpopulation has little to do with climate change

Editor,

After reading a letter in response to an article concerning population growth and global warming, I feel I must respond.

Firstly, the Chinese government does not take away and kill children from families that have more than one child. The policy has, however, been criticized because some people choose to give away or even perhaps kill female children in the hope that the next one will be male.

Second, if policies in Europe designed to reduce population growth are reducing population growth, why are they bad?

Thirdly, the solution to pollution is not dilution. Simply spreading out the population is not going to mean less pollution. It will actually cause more pollution because people will have to travel more to get to where they need to go.

Besides, abandoning our cities and settling the open spaces would have untold effects on the surrounding ecosystem, not to mention that it will eat away even more of our resources.

And lastly, I agree that overpopulation is not a major contributing factor to global warming. It is the pollution created by the billions of people on the planet.
