Preacher deserves respect for defending his beliefs

Editor,

The Rev. Michael Venyah and his family's story is a very intriguing one.

He is a man traveling around in an RV, preaching his opinion of Christianity and getting much criticism along the way.

Why is he doing all of this? Well, it is hard to believe that someone would dedicate his life to intentionally making people pissed off.

His purpose is to get his word out and get students to listen. Although the majority of the students became outraged by Venyah's words, they still took time out of their day to stand and listen to what he had to say.

It is rare to see a student walking to class and stop for someone. The dozens of people running around campus with clipboards asking students to sign up for a group or take a survey do not have that kind of influence on students.

And whatever the issue is, it takes a lot of courage to stand up for what you believe in, especially if most people disagree with the idea.

This makes me respect Venyah a lot more for what he does. Whether his words are right or wrong is the decision of those who listened to him. But Venyah accomplished what he came to UNM for: Attention to his words.
