Track and field

Lee Emmanuel established himself as one of the fastest distance runners in the nation Saturday at Arizona State's Sun Angel Classic.

The junior clocked a time of 3:40.77 in the 1,500-meter run, which is the fastest time recorded by a collegiate runner this season. Emmanuel's time ranks third on the all-time Mountain West Conference list and was 2.17 seconds off a UNM school record.

Meanwhile, sophomore Aleesha Walker set a school record in long jump, hitting a mark of 21-4 at the UTEP Invitational on Saturday. Walker's jump ranks third in the nation this season and is fourth on the all-time MWC list.

Three other Lobo women recorded victories over the weekend. Ariel Burr won the 400 with a time of 54.9 at the Sun Angel Classic. It was her first race at that distance this season.

Javelin thrower Katie Coronado won the javelin throw for the fourth straight time at Saturday's UTEP Invitational. Her mark of 162-4 was more than 21 feet better than the second-place finisher. Coronado is ranked No. 5 nationally in the event.

Defending MWC high jump champion Tiyana Peters matched her personal best with a leap of 5-10 to win the event at UTEP on Saturday.

Baseball

The Lobos had an outstanding series against Air Force, outscoring the Falcons 46-13 over three games this weekend.

UNM's most impressive output came Saturday, when it put a 26-9 shellacking on Air Force.

Junior Brian Cavazos-Galvez set a school record with four home runs in Saturday's rout. He was 6-for-7 from the plate, scoring six runs to go along with 10 RBIs. The Lobos hit eight home runs as a team Saturday and banged out 28 hits.

UNM won Friday's series opener 7-1 behind pitcher Bobby LaFromboise's solid pitching performance. He threw his second consecutive complete game, giving up one run on three hits in nine innings. LaFromboise struck out 10 and allowed just one walk.

In Sunday's finale, the Lobos' bats continued to sizzle in a 13-3 win.

First baseman Kevin Atkinson led the way, going 4-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Shortstop Gracey Scott went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run.

The Lobos improved to 24-12 overall and 8-4 in the Mountain West Conference. Air Force fell to 11-22 on the season and 0-11 in conference play.

Men's tennis

The Lobos earned a three-way share of the Mountain West Conference regular season championship with Utah and TCU this weekend in Provo, Utah.

The three teams finished with 5-1 conference records in 2008. The No. 51 Lobos were 18-7 this season. No. 39 TCU was 18-6 while Utah finished 13-9.

UNM won its first five conference matches before dropping a 4-3 loss to TCU on Saturday.

The teams will get a chance to settle the tie at the MWC Championship Tournament, which begins April 24. The tournament location is to be determined.
