Spring sports wrap-up

Skiing

Recap: UNM finished seventh at the NCAA Championships on March 8 and fifth at the NCAA West Regional on Feb. 23.

Season highlight: The Lobos placed seventh out of 21 teams at the NCAAs. Karin Ohlin and Thomas Schwab earned All-American honors at the championships.

Season lowlight: UNM placed sixth out of 10 teams at the Utah Invitational on January 12.

Recap: The Lobos earned four top-10 finishes in the 13 tournaments they played in this season. They finished sixth at the MWC Championships on April 26.

Season highlight: UNM finished fifth out of 14 squads at the Cougar Classic on April 19. The Lobos shot even for the tournament.

Season lowlight: UNM failed to make the postseason for the first time since 1984.

MVP: Steve Saunders

Women's golf

Recap: The Lobos won the MWC Championship on April 19 at the UNM Championship Golf Course. They finished ninth out of 21 at the NCAA East Regional on May 10.

Season highlight: UNM cruised to the MWC Championship, winning the tournament by 19 shots. Sophomore Jodi Ewart won the individual championship.

Season lowlight: The Lobos finished 17th out of 18 teams at the UCF Challenge on March 11.

MVP: Jodi Ewart

Softball

Recap: The Lobos went 25-26 overall this season and 7-13 in the MWC. UNM finished second to last in the conference.

Season highlight: UNM won nine straight games from Feb. 23 through March 8, including back-to-back doubleheaders on March 7 and 8.

Season lowlight: The Lobos lost six of their last eight games to end the season, including the final two games against Utah on March 9 and 10.

MVP: Kelly Ninemire

Baseball

Recap: UNM is 31-20 overall and 15-5 in MWC play. The Lobos have won four of their last five and will play in the MWC Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, starting May 20.

Season highlight: The Lobos had a brilliant offensive performance in a three-game series against Air Force from April 11-13. UNM outscored the Falcons 46-13 in the sweep, including a 26-9 trouncing April 12.

Season lowlight: The Lobos suffered a five-game losing streak from April 22-27. The streak was capped by a 12-1 home loss to UC Irvine on April 27.

MVP: Brian Cavazos-Galvez

Men's basketball

Recap: The Lobos went 24-9, fell 82-80 to Utah in the first round of the MWC Tournament and lost 68-66 to California in the first round of the NIT. UNM finished 11-5 in conference in the regular season, which was third behind BYU and UNLV.

Season highlight: The Lobos enjoyed a seven-game winning streak from Dec. 8 through Jan. 5. The streak was highlighted by an 86-85 overtime win at UTEP on Jan. 2 followed by a double-overtime 99-92 victory at Wyoming on Jan. 5.

Season lowlight: Postseason play was a letdown for the NCAA-hopeful Lobos, with the overtime loss to Utah and NIT loss to California providing a bitter end to a turnaround season.

MVP: J.R. Giddens

Women's basketball

Recap: UNM won the MWC Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight year. The Lobos were 20-13 overall and went 9-7 in the conference during the regular season. They lost 61-60 to West Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Season highlight: UNM won six straight games in February and March, capped by the three wins in the MWC Tournament. The Lobos held off San Diego State 62-59 in the conference championship game.

Season lowlight: The Lobos suffered their worst offensive performance of the season on Jan. 26, losing 41-38 to BYU at The Pit.

MVP: Dionne Marsh

Men's tennis

Recap: Facing some stout competition, UNM went 20-8 overall, including an appearance in the MWC Tennis Championship that helped secure head coach Alan Dils MWC Coach of the Year.

Season highlight: After losing to Texas Tech on February 19, the Lobos went on a rampage, winning their next 11 matches, including two dominating 7-0 sweeps against Western Michigan and Air Force.

Season lowlight: After competing hard throughout the season, UNM was unable to capture the MWC Tennis Championship, losing a closely-contested battle to TCU, 4-3.

MVP: Max Jones

Women's tennis

Recap: The Lobos went 15-9 in the regular season, earning a No. 3 seed in the MWC Championships, where they were defeated by No. 2 seed UNLV, 4-0.

Season highlight: The Lobos cruised by San Diego State in the MWC Championship semifinal, 4-2.

Season lowlight: Given the opportunity to compete against the nation's top tennis teams, UNM fell at the hands of No. 16 Vanderbilt 5-2.

MVP: Lucy Scott

Swimming and Diving

Recap: The Lobos kicked off the season with a 252-204 win over Northern Colorado and placed second at the Open Water Championships.

Season highlight: Three members of the UNM swimming and diving team - Tori Clarridge, Carrie Quinn and Ashley Grisdale - were named to the All-MWC team.

Season lowlight: Hoping to end the season on a high note against an MWC opponent, the Lobos fell to the TCU Horned Frogs, 137.5-105.5.

MVP: Carrie Quinn

Track and Field

Recap: UNM helped secure the Rio Grande Rivalry and qualified for several events at the NCAA Regionals.

Season highlight: Representing the state of New Mexico, the Lobos won 10 events at the Don Kirby Memorial Invitational in Albuquerque and qualified for NCAA Regionals in the 4x100-meter relay, posting a time of 45.58.

Season lowlight: In a year accented by success for the Lobos, the only low for UNM was when head coach Joe Franklin announced the cancellation of the Lobo Invitational - a home meet that the Lobo track and field players were looking forward to.
