Javelin thrower takes second at NCAA meet

UNM women's javelin star Katie Coronado finished second at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on June 14.

Securing the silver medal, Coronado broke a school record with a throw of 179-6. Coronado will compete at the USA Olympic Trials in two weeks.

Robert Caldwell, who represented New Mexico in the pole-vaulting event, finished in sixth place in the finals. Caldwell cleared 17-2.75 to earn All-American honors.

However, Lee Emanuel couldn't capitalize in the 1,500 meter race. Emanuel, who entered the meet as a No. 5 seed, just missed qualifying by 0.67 seconds with a time of 3:44.53.

Fellow distance runner Jeremy Johnson saw his collegiate career come to an end, as he finished in seventh place with a time of 29:06.13 in the 10,000-meter dash.
