Daily Lobo Spotlight

Nina Freer: Studio Photography

Daily Lobo: Where are you from, Nina?

Nina Freer: I was born in Toronto, Ontario. I'm from Manitoba, and I grew up in Arizona.

DL: How long have you been down here in the States?

NF: I regressed. I moved back two years ago. I was living up in Manitoba for a while again.

DL: And you work in the art museum?

NF: Yeah, we're front desk people. I've been here for about a year and a half, working at the front desk.

DL: What year are you?

NF: It's hard to say. I'm working on my second degree.

DL: What's your first degree in?

NF: International development - it's a BA. I was going to a university in the downtown area in Winnipeg, and that university was focusing on international relations and so forth, working at development in a morally holistic manner, so that's what I was focusing on in my first degree.

DL: And so you're back for a second?

NF: Well, I've wanted to get into the art field, so I'm near graduating, I guess, in a year.

DL: What are your hobbies?

NF: Right now, it's kind of just photo. I used to be really involved in politics and activism, but that's kind of phased out, just because there's so much to learn in photography, at least for me. I'm not technically-minded, and so I'll just keep reading up on everything between photography genres. So that's kind of been my obsession right now.

DL: Do you prefer digital or darkroom work?

NF: I love the darkroom, and I'm just starting digital, but I like it. It's more conducive for doing things quickly and editing and so forth, and it's my first going into color, because before it was just straight black and white. I like the tactile aspect of being in the darkroom, and I think there is a bit of a community in there in some sense versus the computer, where you're just zoned in and you're shutting people out. You're scanning for images online and you're doing your research online.
