Greek Life councils elect new presidents

The governing bodies of UNM's fraternities and sororities are under new management.

The College Panhellenic Council and the Interfraternity Council held presidential elections Sunday and Monday.

Michael Westervelt, of Phi Gamma Delta, was elected IFC president, and Tess Goering was elected Panhellenic Council president.

The councils are designed to give fraternities and sororities a medium in which they can get involved with each other, UNM and the community at large.

The IFC is made up of two delegates from each fraternity, said Phi Gamma Delta member Mackenzie Woods.

Woods is the retiring president of the IFC and said the council has played a crucial role in uniting fraternities.

He said he has worked as IFC president to connect fraternities with UNM and the local community in a positive way.

"What I set out to do was to reinvent the image of a fraternity," he said. "What we really started thinking about was to have a really philanthropic concentration, working with the University on initiatives and being a voice."

Woods said the next IFC president will have to work to change the stereotypical image of fraternities.

"Also, they are going to be dealing with some highly energetic fraternity men that are in an IFC that will change things and want to step up and be far more vocal," Woods said. "Now that IFC is a bigger deal in the fraternity community, you have people coming with more opinions, which is good."

Westervelt said his goal as IFC president is to strengthen unity among fraternities and create a positive fraternity image.

The Panhellenic Council at UNM aims to help sorority members contribute to their community and university.

Goering replaced Stephanie Heikkinen as president of the Panhellenic Council.

Heikkinen said her goal as president was to unify all three Greek Life councils: the College Panhellenic, the Interfraternity and the Multicultural Greek.

"My biggest issue is just sort of a unity between all three councils," she said. "That has been something we have been wanting to establish for a while."

Goering said she will carry on the work Heikkinen started in her term to unify Greek Life and also promote Panhellenic awareness among the sororities and the public.

"What I would like to see is something like a Panhellenic Pride Week where we would have a whole week of different events, like a fundraiser or philanthropy event, or just a day where all sorority women would wear their letters," she said.
