Obama victory a rejection of neoconservative ideology

Editor,

Tuesday's election was more than simply a sweeping mandate for massive change in this country. It was a total and resounding rejection of the entire neoconservative ideology.

No more will truly patriotic citizens like me have to endure being called un-American for simply disagreeing with an extremist fringe element of the minority party. No more will our patriotism be questioned just because we happen to have a different opinion about something. Maybe now we can actually begin having some constructive debate about the future of our nation without the divisive rhetoric of years past. How refreshing that will be.

Now all the neoconservatives will understand how we've felt for the last eight years: humiliated, angry, confused and disgusted to be Americans at times. Now, all of us pointy-headed intellectuals can finally have a voice again. And guess what? We were right all along, as the overwhelming majority of our fellow countrymen confirmed Tuesday. Finally we can support science, education and the arts again without suffering the backlash of anti-intellectualism that has held us back for so long.

I don't agree with everything Barack Obama stands for (particularly in foreign policy), but this is a good place to start bringing some integrity, intelligence and accountability back to this country.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to parroting the neocons and throwing the same lame arguments they used to support President Bush's policies right back in their faces, like: "Well, you may not have voted for him, but he is our president, and we must support him no matter what," or, "If you don't like it here, why don't you leave?" Or maybe even, "You are un-American if you don't support the president."

Yes, I am gloating, but with good reason. The American people have utterly, profoundly and unambiguously spoken. We have sent the criminals and the real America-haters packing for good, along with their hateful, destructive and divisive ideology.

Good riddance. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Thanks for nearly destroying our country. We won't miss you.

This really was a historic election. Thank you, America, for restoring my faith in you.
