Last year, Sen. Pete Domenici, who has represented New Mexico for nearly 25 years, announced he would not seek re-election in 2008. Democratic Rep. Tom Udall and Republican Rep. Steve Pearce are battling for his seat in Washington.
Energy and the environment
Steve Pearce:
"There is no quick fix for the energy crisis, but there are short-term, medium-term and long-term solutions that can be looked into. The short-term would be to cure the gas prices by drilling more offshore and here on American soil to lower the amount of gas prices and put money into the pockets of the Americans."
Voted NO on tax incentives for energy production and conservation. (May 2008)
Voted NO on keeping moratorium on drilling for oil offshore. (June 2006)
Tom Udall:
"We need to increase investment in clean, alternative energies, like wind, solar and geothermal power. I will continue to fight for more alternative energy funding in the U.S. Senate, because doing so will help bring down electricity, gas and food prices."
