Editor,
I am excited about the University's declared commitment to a green initiative. I would hope this includes pedestrians. As I make my way from G Lot to the hospital and back, I encounter a sidewalk barricaded now for several weeks. University shuttles, work trucks and private cars and trucks all ignore the posted 20 mph speed limit. I have had more than one close call while in a pedestrian crosswalk, as these are ignored as well.
The inappropriately wide streets are not compatible with safe human habitat.
I would be happy to take the shuttles, but they are unreliable and even at peak use times arrive about once every 25 minutes for my particular destination. The other shuttle drivers refuse to drop me at the roundabout since my journey originates at G Lot. I see a bus stop there, but they tell me they can't drop me off, although there is one very kind driver who will do so if I can catch his bus.
Even so, it is not as if the roundabout is a safe place to cross. Vehicles literally careen around it. Even bicycles are not operated with common sense there. It may be because they are watching for cars that are out of control for the conditions. I keep hoping the University will make this campus a safe place to be.
