Editor,
It is the beginning of another semester, and, as I understand it, this is the time for Greek rush. There are many social fraternities and sororities that are highly respected on campus, but one different kind of fraternity is left unnoticed. This is not your typical fraternity. In fact, it is a co-ed fraternity, and it is not a "social" fraternity at all. It is a professional fraternity specifically founded for business students. It is Delta Sigma Pi.
Delta Sigma Pi has been around since 1907 and has chapters across the nation at hundreds of different colleges and universities. Since 1907, more than 216,000 business students have been initiated into the fraternity.
At UNM, the Gamma Iota chapter will celebrate its 50-year anniversary in May. I have been a part of this fraternity for four semesters now, and it has changed my life. I have learned how to communicate effectively, be more organized, interview properly, dress professionally, as well as how to approach individuals in the professional realm and how to stand for what I believe in. I have learned how to be a professional in the business world, which is so much more than what one learns in the classroom. I have also made great friendships that will last a lifetime, but, most importantly, I have learned what it is like to be respected.
I am the vice president of Pledge Education, and I invite everybody interested in business to come meet the chapter at 7 p.m. Jan. 29 in the Anderson School of Management, Room 1064. Come see for yourself how amazing this group is, see what you can learn from them and imagine what you may be able to teach them.
