Editor,
UNM is dealing with painful cuts in funding, with ramifications that include cutting phone lines, firing TAs, increasing class sizes and reducing class options for undergraduates. At the same time, the roles at UNM are increasing in part because people now unemployed are trying to increase their skill sets. In other words, people are vying to improve themselves, making themselves more marketable and more valuable to the work force. It seems odd that at the same time that people realize the value of a good education, the state makes cuts there. Both higher education and primary education are vital for the state’s economy. Education is one area that a cut not only slices options now, but also reduces options for future people.
