Bleachers replaced after collapse

Flintco, the contractor for The Pit’s $60 million renovation, replaced seven rows of bleachers Monday.

The bleachers collapsed in UNM’s student section during Saturday’s game between UNM and BYU.

Flincto said in a statement on Monday that removable seating at University Arena will be scrapped in favor of stable seating. The company said the bleachers will be replaced before the UNM women’s game against Air Force on Wednesday.

“After review with the University and design team, it was decided to replace all the removable seating with original seating,” the statement said. “All removable seats are being taken out, and the original seats are being reinstalled.”

Damage to the bleachers wasn’t reported until after the game when students from the section rushed the court in celebration. No injuries were reported during or after the game.

The Pit also has had trouble with fire alarms. Twice this season, the arena had to be evacuated because the fire alarm sounded. Athletics said in a statement that The Pit will be in compliance with state fire code laws before tip-off of Wednesday night’s women’s game against Air Force.
