Australian star joins UNM

Welcome to UNM, Hugh Greenwood.

Head coach Steve Alford announced Wednesday that Greenwood signed a national letter of intent to play for the Lobos.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 209-pound Australian becomes the Lobos’ second 2011-12 signee. He also becomes the fourth Aussie to sign with the Lobos and will join friend and Lobo forward Cameron Bairstow.

Bairstow and Greenwood are products of the Australian Institute of Sport.
Alford said Greenwood brings UNM elite guard play.

“Hugh brings a wealth of international experience, including gold
medals,” Alford said. “He is an exciting guard that will help fill a need
that we have for next year, and he should be able to contribute right
away for us.”

Greenwood was the youngest player for the Australian Senior National Team and will try out for their 2012 Olympic team.

He was named Basketball Australia’s Junior Male Player of the Year and was captain of the national team that won gold at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival.
