Elevator doors close on 71-year-old former University of New Mexico President F. Chris Garcia (center) and his legal council David Serna(white suit) after Garcia’s first appearance in court since charges of promoting prostitution and tampering with evidence were filed against him. As Garcia left the courtroom a crowd of journalists pursued him into the elevator.

Update: F. Chris Garcia's first court apperance, bond set at $35,000

UPDATE: June 24 at 6:15 p.m.
Garcia went before Metropolitan Court Judge Sharon Walton this afternoon for a felony first appearance on the charges of promoting prostitution, conspiracy, and evidence tampering.

Codefendants in the Southwest Companions online prostitution investigation, Douglas Plummer and Brian Dorsey, also made court appearances.

Garcia appeared with attorney David Serna.

Walton ruled all three defendants’ bonds would be continued at the $35,000 cash or surety bond they each posted last night, and forbade them from leaving the state without permission from the court or using the Internet.

Garcia refused to comment, but Serna said the public shouldn’t believe everything they hear.

“We have lot’s of work to do,” Serna said. “I would encourage the public to view with scrutiny and with suspicion and skepticism what’s been put out so far by the informants and the police department.”
