The men’s basketball team is going dancing again.
The Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament champion Lobos received a No. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament by the selection committee on Sunday and will play No. 12 seed Long Beach State Thursday in Portland, Ore.
The Lobos (27-6), are in the West Region of the bracket alongside conference foe Colorado State, who is seeded No. 11.
Four Mountain West schools made the 68-team tournament including UNLV, a No. 6 seed in the South Region and No. 6 seed San Diego State, who is in the Midwest Region.
Five of the top six seeds in the West region won their conference tournament over the weekend.
Top-seeded Michigan State (26-7), beat Ohio State 68-64 on Sunday to win the Big Ten tourney and catapult into a No. 1 seed.
Missouri, the No. 2 seed, won the Big-12 tournament after beating Baylor 90-75.
Rick Pitino’s No. 4 seeded Louisville won four games in four straight days to clinch the Big East tourney.
The only team in the country with one loss, No 6 seed Murray State (30-1), finished the season Ohio Valley tournament champs beating Tennessee State 54-52.
This will be the second time in three years the Lobos are part of March Madness. In the 2009-10 season, UNM earned a No. 3 seed, but lost in the second round of the tournament to the Washington Huskies 82-64.
