ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Kunio Kono has been hired as New Mexico’s swimming and diving head coach.
He becomes only the fourth swimming and diving coach in the school’s history.
The 41-year-old Kono replaces Tracy Ljone, who left the program last month after seven years with the Lobos.
Kono formerly was UNLV’s associate head coach.
He spent nine years with the Rebels, helping their men’s team win seven consecutive Mountain West Conference championships from 2004-05 through 2010-11. UNLV finished second in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in 2011-12.
