Men’s Soccer

The New Mexico men’s soccer team earned its first-ever win in Conference USA 3-1 at Marshall University on Monday.

Ben McKendry scored the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute thanks to an assist from Niko Hansen. Michael Calderon added to the Lobos’ lead when he made his fourth goal of the season in the 31st minute with the assist coming from Hansen.

The Thundering Herd cut the Lobos’ lead to one when Zach Hunter nailed a penalty kick in the 35th minute.

Hansen then put the game away thanks to his fifth goal of the season with the assist going to Riley McGovern.

UNM (5-3-1) took 10 shots with eight on goal, while Marshall (2-5-1) also attempted 10 shots but only three were on goal.

Men’s Golf
Heading into Saturday’s final round at the Tucker Invitational, the New Mexico men’s golf team trailed Arizona State by 11 strokes.

But thanks to juniors Gavin Green and Victor Perez, and freshman Andrej Bevins, who combined to go 11 under par in the final round, the Lobos were able to come back and win the tournament with a 7-under 81, winning the tournament by 18 strokes with a 1-under 863.

Nobody from ASU shot better than a 5-over 77 and went 22-over 310 for the tournament to finish second.

Green and Bevins officially tied for the individualist medal honor, carding a 5-under 211 over two days.

USC (887, 23-over) finished third, UNLV (888, 22-over) came in fourth and Brigham Young (894, 30-over) came in at fifth place.

Football
New Mexico football sophomore wide receiver Carlos Wiggins received the College Football Performance Awards’ National All-Purpose Performer of the Week for his effort against UNLV on Saturday.

In the 56-42 loss to the Rebels, Wiggins scored three touchdowns with 263 all-purpose yards – 119 yards rushing, 57 receiving and 87 from kickoff returns.

Women’s Soccer
New Mexico goalkeeper Cassie Ulrich earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week with a 0.49 goal against average versus San Jose State and Fresno State over the weekend.

It’s the first award Ulrich has received in her career, and the first time a Lobo has been honored this season.
