Women’s Soccer

The New Mexico women’s soccer team split a pair of games over the weekend and are now 6-8-1, 4-1 Mountain West Conference on the year.

On Friday, UNM lost 3-2 in double overtime at Wyoming. The Cowgirls scored the first goal of the game on an own-goal to give the Lobos an early 1-0 lead.

Wyoming tied it at 1 when defender Kasey Curtis shot a header into the corner of the net. Forward Sara Paul had the assist.

UNM’s sophomore midfielder Annie Wheeler gave the team a 2-1 advantage after she shot past Wyoming’s goal keeper. The assist went to senior midfielder Elba Holguin.

With six seconds left, the Cowgirls’ midfielder Sheree Small tied the game at 2-all with a header from the left post and forward Lucie McDowell had the assist.

The Cowgirls (6-8-1, 3-2 MWC) won the game in double overtime when McDowell scored on a break-away for her seventh goal of the season.

The Lobos rebounded on Sunday with a 1-0 at Air Force (2-8-1, 1-2 MWC).

The lone goal came at the 55:09 mark when Holguin found the back of the net from 10 yards out. Redshirt sophomore forward Madisyn Olguin had the assist.

Men’s Basketball

At the Mountain West Conference men’s basketball media day in Colorado Springs, Colo., media members unanimously selected the New Mexico men’s basketball team to take the MWC.

The Lobos earned 23 of the 24 first place votes and finished with 263 points. UNLV, the only other team to receive a first place vote, and Boise State tied for second with 214 points.

San Diego State University (212 points) came in fourth, followed by Utah State (156 points), Colorado State (142 points), Wyoming (112 points), Fresno State (96 points), Nevada (84 points), Air Force (61 points) and San Jose State (30 points).

Two Lobos were also named to the Preseason All-Mountain West team in senior guard Kendall Williams and junior center Alex Kirk.

Williams, who is the reigning Mountain West Player of the Year, was tabbed as the Preseason Player of the Year.
