Goodman sparks Lobos past George Mason

On a night where sophomore guard Cullen Neal did not play due to an ankle injury and senior guard Hugh Greenwood struggled shooting the ball, the New Mexico men’s basketball team found a new star in the making.

Junior college transfer Jordan Goodman scored a career-high 19 points on 7-10 shooting from the floor as UNM defeated the George Mason Patriots 69-58 in the ESPN Puerto Rico Tip-Off.

It looked as if Goodman wanted to silence a lot of critics after not producing too much in the first three games. He had a combined 10 points in those three contests.

Senior guard Deshawn Delaney found his rhythm early as he had 13 points in the first half. He finished with 16 points, none better than his SportsCenter Top 10 worthy dunk in the second half.

The Lobos were coming off of their first loss of the season to the Boston College Eagles on Thursday.

Sophomore center Obij Aget got going early as he had four quick points and finished the game with six points and four rebounds. These numbers may not seem stellar but they are better than his zero point, zero rebound performance to Boston College.

Greenwood struggled from the floor after his 24-point outing on Thursday. He went a sloppy 3-14 from the floor and 6-10 from the free throw line. He finished with 13 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Neal rolled his ankle early in the second half of Thursday’s loss to Boston College and did not return. He was on crutches during the George Mason game and his return is still questionable.

There was no major fracture seen by doctors but there is possible ligament damage or a hairline fracture in his left ankle, head coach Craig Neal said.

The Lobos will face Texas A&M on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
