Sports briefs for Jan. 12

Track and Field

The New Mexico men’s and women’s track and field teams earned 16 top-10 finishes in the opening meet of the season at the Air Force Collegiate Open on Friday.

Aasha Marler earned the only first-place finish for the women with a win in the long jump. She recorded a jump of 19 feet, 8 1/4 inches. The senior also took sixth in the 60 meter dash.

Jannell Hadnot took second in the triple jump with a leap of 38-9 3/4. Annie Stirling cleared 12-5 1/2 in the pole vault for a silver medal.

On the track, Holly Van Grinsven earned second in the 60 hurdles, clocking in at 8.68 seconds.

As for the men, Ridge Jones won the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.79; Allan Hamilton finished right behind Jones, coming in at 6.90.

Yannick Roggatz earned third place in the long jump with a distance of 23-1/2.

Golf

UNM senior golfer Gavin Green took third place at the PGM Panasonic Open Malaysia Tournament of Champions in Petaling, Malaysia.

Green shot an even-par 72 in the final round and shot a 6-under overall for the 72-hole professional event. Danny Chia won the event by shooting a 16-under for the event.

The senior tied with Kenneth De Silva, who shot a final-round 69.

New Mexico will begin the spring season at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Arizona staring on Jan. 26-27.
