Crime briefs for March 19

Fraud at Bursar’s Office

On March 13, a Bursar’s Office employee reported to UNM police in reference to fraud. According to the report, $8,769 was deposited into a student’s bursar’s account on March 3. The deposit was made via automated clearing house. On March 6, the deposit was then returned for non-payment, which resulted in a net loss for UNM. The employee told police the money was refunded to a separate account and there had been numerous logins to the student’s account from different people, which was unusual. The student told the employee he had no knowledge of the situation. The initial incident report was forwarded to detectives for a follow-up investigation.

Larceny at Mesa Vista Hall

On March 10, A UNM employee made a report to UNMPD in reference to a theft at Mesa Vista Hall. The employee noticed a camera was missing from her desk. An empty beverage can and candy wrappers were also left on the desk. According to the report, the victim reported leaving the office and locking the doors. The can was later dusted for latent fingerprints but none were found, and there were no suspects at the time of the report.

Damage at La Posada Dining Hall

On March 7, UNMPD was dispatched to La Posada dining hall in reference to broken windows. According to the report, a security officer discovered broken windows on the east and west side entry doors as well as a large pane window on the south side. The security officer did not notice anyone suspicious in the area. The case is closed pending further leads.

Damage of a vehicle

On March 10, UNMPD was dispatched to WisePies Arena in regards to an attempted burglary of a vehicle. The officer observed severe damage to the side-door handle, which consisted of the handle hanging and bent. The victim told the officer nothing was missing from inside the cabin and believed the offender did not succeed in gaining access to the vehicle. The incident occurred between 2:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. There were no suspects or witnesses at the time of the report.

UNMPD assists in arrest

On March 10, Colorado law enforcement officers contacted UNMPD, requesting help in the arrest of a male subject. The subject attended UNM and had a warrant out for his arrest. After receiving information from the Colorado officers, UNMPD responded to the address listed and the subject was placed under arrest without incident.

Property damage at Woodward Hall

The UNM Foundation president’s office, located in Woodward Hall, was broken into twice within the same week. According to a report, UNMPD was dispatched in reference to broken windows. The reporting employees said a large rock was thrown from the exterior of the building breaking a double-glass window. The officers reported seeing a large rock and shattered glass scattered in the office. There are no witnesses, to either incident, at the time of the report.
