UNM student up for Rhodes Scholarship

Katarina Pacheco, a UNM biochemistry student, will be traveling to the University of Utah to participate in the finalist interview for the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, according to a University press release. The scholarship was created by the will of Cecil John Rhodes for the purpose of educating future leaders of the world who will be committed to serving the public good, according to the Rhodes Trust website.

Pacheco is a decorated student having received various academic honors such as the National Merit Scholar, Elks Most Valuable Student Award and Woodmen of the World American History Award, according to the release. Pacheco is also a member/co-founder of the Autism Society UNM and team captain of various intramural sports team.

She has also participated in research conducted in Las Cruces and the Health Sciences Center at UNM, according to the release.

If awarded the scholarship, Pacheco plans to study at Oxford University with 88 other Rhode Scholars from around the world. Pacheco will depart this month for her final interview in pursuit of the scholarship.
