Last week, UNM announced their new interim director of choral activities in Juan Hernández, according to a University release.
Hernández, who was born in Bucaramanga, Colombia, graduated from Los Andes University in Bogota with an undergraduate degree in Choral Conducting. He specializes in piano, violin, and clarinet.
Hernández has a lot of experience in his field, according to the release.
“He … founded several choirs with the specific goal of interpreting music of all eras and genres, participating in several choir festivals in Bogotá, and in the third Choir Olympics in Bremen, Germany in 2004,” the release stated.
Hernández had a lot to say about the new job title handed to him by UNM.
“It is always a pleasure to make music with people that share with me the passion for choral music, and it has been a privilege to be working with the choral programs at the University of New Mexico,” Hernández said in the release. “The choral activities at this university have a highly positive impact on this region of the country. I am honored to continue with the legacy that UNM has built over the past years.”
According to the release, “UNM University Chorus, which has the longest continuous history at UNM, dating back to at least the mid-1920s, today enjoys a well-deserved reputation for providing the community with fine performances.”
TUNM’s University Chorus and Symphony Orchestra are going to perform Mass in G, D167 by Franz Schubert at 7:30 p.m. in Popejoy Hall on Tuesday.
Tickets for the event are priced at $15, $10, or $5. They can be picked up beforehand at the Fine Arts Box Office or on UNMTickets.com
