Monday on the Street: New Mexico IDs

What do you think about the U.S government no longer accepting New Mexico state IDs?

Josiah Fredette, sophomore, nursing

“I didn’t know they weren’t accepting New Mexico IDs. If anything, I would blame that on New Mexico, because I know that we do things differently and I find that to be stupid, because New Mexico should be on the national standard.”

Gabe Gallegos, sophomore, political science

“I think it’s a bluff. I think it’s a scare tactic that I don’t think is appropriate. Our IDs are worth just as much here as they’re worth everywhere else. I think whatever the controversy surrounding our ID laws are, I think it’s a bluff. I think we, as New Mexicans, need to start calling that bluff and saying, ‘no, our IDs are worth just as much anywhere else.’”

Amelia Pedrego, freshman, political science

“I think that it’s pretty dumb and that it’s unacceptable. The reason being, is probably because of the amount of illegal immigrants and the amount of Mexicans that we do have in this state. To deny IDs for that reason is ridiculous because not only should illegal immigrants have the right to travel around the country, but so should everybody who’s a native citizen of the U.S.”

Amir Nafchi, graduate student, electrical computer engineering

“It’s been a controversy for a couple of previous years, I think it’s because in the past the government of New Mexico issued IDs to undocumented people and now they don’t want them to leave this state. I don’t know why they can be here but they can’t be in other states; it’s kind of making New Mexico a big jail. I think that’s not a good way to handle that.”
