Editor,
At the recent rally on campus calling for a $15 minimum wage, I happened to see a counter-protester holding a sign which read, “Regulation kills jobs.”
I would like to ask that protester exactly what kinds of regulations kill jobs? Do the terribly burdensome regulations that require businesses to install emergency exits, fire alarms and sprinkler systems in their buildings kill jobs? Perhaps you are referring to the excessive government regulations that prevent employers from abusing child labor? Maybe you had in mind the unreasonable laws mandating minimum standards for food and drug quality.
Government regulation hardly kills jobs. It is the lack of regulation that kills far more people.
Sincerely,
James Friedman
